Actual cost: An old bar counter turned into a farmhouse-style coffee corner, priced at $250

DIYer Dori Turner turned an outdated bar into a fantastic coffee corner for less than $250. How is this.
When we moved into the two-story building in 1972, an interesting feature of the house was that it had a bar counter. But like the rest of the house, it urgently needs to be updated. It is covered with denim-themed wallpaper, with glass shelves, outdated countertops and dilapidated cabinets. The sink is not draining properly, and the overhead lights are an eye-catcher.
We are coffee lovers, so we decided to turn the bar into a coffee corner and give it the feel of a modern farmhouse. By making the most of what we have and doing it ourselves, we achieved impressive results, and the budget for this project was even slightly lower than the budget.
We started by painting the kitchen cabinets. We chose Perpetual Gray by Sherwin Williams, you can find it at Lowe’s, which really set the tone for the rest of the house. We also use this color in the kitchen, laundry room, guest bathroom and interior doors. It helps to create a cohesive appearance throughout the home. Then we updated the coffee bar cabinet door with black knobs.
For the countertop, we bought an unfinished pine board and made a DIY meat block counter. We cut the board to the right size and save money by dyeing it with stains already in another project.
We went back and forth considering whether to keep the sink, but finally decided that it would be convenient to be able to fill the coffee pot there. In order to save money, we kept the existing sink and faucet on the bar, but repositioned it to the side so that we had room for the coffee machine. We cut a hole in the meat block in the sink, and then sealed the meat block with Watco Butcher Block Sealer (this sealant is also available at Lowe’s) to protect the wood.
We did not remove the wallpaper, but decided to put it on top. We purchased primer MDF overlap for this project. This provides a fast and affordable solution for outdated wallpapers that look great! We filled the nail holes with the putty we already had on hand, sanded them and painted them with white paint.
The existing lights were originally located on the ceiling of the bar. We chose to move the box to the back wall and installed a galvanized metal farmhouse style lamp. It really adds some features to the space!
We installed black farmhouse-style hooks on both sides of the coffee corner for easy storage of cups. We also installed a towel bar in front of the fake drawer to hang towels, which is really convenient!
The final step is to add the “collect” logo that I sold in a home improvement store. It explains what we want our home to be-a meeting place for friends and family!
Our coffee bar project has a budget of US$250, and we were able to stay below that budget by doing it ourselves and walking around to find the best price. In addition, choosing to use a DIY meat block counter instead of a stone countertop saves us a lot of time!
We like the result of this space! It is no longer an obtrusive thing, but a showcase of our home. We use it every day, and we get a lot of compliments when we have guests!
